My Datsun 510 Sedan

Chassis Dyno Results

5/22/2004 SERCA Dyno Day

I attended a Dyno Day with the SE-R crowd to see what the motor would put out. It was near stock, but with a 2.25" exhaust and an elbow intake. The results impressed me. 145 HP and 140 ft-lbs at the wheels! A stock S14 KA is rated at 155HP at the crank. I must be doing something right.

6/11/2005 Solo Dyno Run
After converting to individual throttle bodies, my custom header, and a 2.5" exhaust, I expected more power from the motor. After the initial drives, however, I didn't feel additional power. The dyno knows all.

Compared to the 5/22 results:

3000 rpm +2ft/lb, = hp
3500 rpm -3ft/lb, -3hp
4000 rpm -9ft/lb, -6hp
4500 rpm -7ft/lb, -4hp
5000 rpm = ft/lb, = hp
5500 rpm -4ft/lb, -6hp
6000 rpm -1ft/lb, -2hp
6300 rpm* -1ft/lb, -1hp

*This dyno runs based on wheel speed (MPH) and not rpm; we hit the set speed before the redline.

This seems to indicate the stock intake manifold is not the restriction to making power with the KA - at least at near-stock levels.

I realize the dyno results are not directly comparable, and I realize I did just that. However, the results reflect what I've felt in driving the car after the modifications: specifically that there was not a huge HP gain (in fact, there was a slight loss). Despite common thinking that bigger is better, this is not necessarily so.
